Andrew was wonderful - super friendly, helpful, thorough, and efficient! He ran a full maintenance check on our HVAC and plumbing systems and proposed tangible, cost-effective solutions to small needs that emerged. He was able to accomplish those needs on the same day and mostly independent of us. I will certainly look to Akian and Andrew for any future needs!

Evan R. from Akian provided excellent service. On the first visit, he replaced our indirect hot water tank and installed a whole house filter. He was able to diagnose the problem with our heating system that our previous plumbers were unable to correct. After he repaired multiple corroded elements and upgraded the neutralizing system, our heating system was working again! He was very knowledgeable and provided superior work and understandable guidance regarding required future maintenance.

I am writing this review for my step father who is not good with technology. He hired Akian for an emergency winter no-heat call and they came in the next day. They were responsive and updated via text message about arrival time. They spent about two hours fixing the problem and the bill came to over $800. A few weeks later the part that they had replaced sprung a massive leak and flooded the basement. They came back and replaced the part once again under warranty. This company is responsive but I am not sure I would hire them again because they are very expensive. They do stand behind their work though.

James G helped us the same day we reported a leak from our ac unit, showing up about 2 hours from the report. From there onwards he was very dedicated and explained every issue and the applied solution. He came back for a second review to install preventive measures, and again was very detailed with all his explanations. Highly recommend. Thanks for the service, James!

They are very friendly and only repair what's needed to be repaired. They made the repair and left me feeling like I didn't get taken advantage of.

I called to ask for a general price range for replacing a P-trap. They told me they would not provide any pricing information unless they first sent a master plumber out for a $120 service call. I even asked what the *lowest* possible cost for a basic P-trap replacement would be, just so I could have some idea of what to expect, and they still refused to answer. That made me uncomfortable. I understand that an exact quote may require seeing the job in person, but refusing to provide even a starting price or rough range felt unnecessarily vague. I didn't feel comfortable paying $120 upfront without having any idea what I might ultimately be charged, so I decided not to move forward with them.

Sean and Andrew were great. I came home from work one day to discover water damage to my bathroom ceiling. Sean came out quickly to assess the situation. He was able to get someone out to remediate right away. Once the cleanup was complete, Andrew came out to do some further investigate and was able to successfully identify the water source in my very old condo building in Brighton. Both were very friendly and professional. Highly recommended!

So wanted to give an update to a 2 star review i left for Akian for work done about a month ago. I had two gripes: Call center customer service and dispatch and high pricing. I have to give their management credit: They saw my review, reached out and yesterday service manage Jeff called me. It's rare these days for someone to really listen to how things looked on my side of the road and to Jeff's credit he did that. Not only that we reached and agreement regarding what i felt was high pricing two two of the three components they replaced on my AC system. In addition he mentioned that they are moving away from the foreign call center customer service--this is a good thing. Who wants to feel if they get disconnected they can't call the person back? All this reassured me that despite some issues they are getting themselves on track and that they cared enough to make things right for me.

Carlos came today to troubleshoot my central AC. which stopped working yesterday. He was very upfront saying that he was unfamiliar with my particular set up. However, with assistance from his office, he was able to diagnose and fix the issue. It was not a simple 1-2-3 due to the poor initial installation from another company 9 years ago. He was diligent looking for solutions and was able to get the AC working. Part of the issue was the thermostat, which he replaced. I will make Akian my go-to company for my system. thank you Carlos. It is only a 4 because I was hoping for same day services yesterday.

Do not call if you actually have an emergency. Called them around 5pm this afternoon, told them my toilet was leaking all over the floor and that I was on the ground floor of a multi-floor condominium building. They opened a ticket and said someone would be out between 6pm and midnight. Called around 6:30 to see if there was an update, because even with the water turned off I had about 2 inches of water leaking out onto the floor. She said the plumber was finishing up a call then heading to me. I called an hour later and she said "oh, we don't service multi-floor buildings you will have to call someone else but they NEVER called to tell me. Wasted two hours waiting for a plumber that was never coming, causing damage to the bathroom floor and the carpeting in the hallway.

My first time using Akian for my HVAC maintenance. James G. was friendly, knowledgeable, good at explaining and informative. Much appreciated. I also appreciate that the company sent out a reminder text for the appointment with a picture of the service person. Consider me a new customer of Akian who will be requesting James G. every time! Thank you.

We had an AC system that was not running, so we scheduled an appointment with Akian. Matt showed up on schedule, diagnosed the problem, and completed the necessary work quickly and at a reasonable price. We have used Akian in the past and continue to be very happy with their service. We will call them again for plumbing and HVAC issues in the future.

Sean C. and his assistant Berkeley came by on schedule and assessed the rusting flange on my toilet. Gave me a couple of options and what he recommended. Toilet installed and working well. The key items for the five star rating was their professional mannerism and attention to cleanliness (wearing shoe covers, wiping up spilt water, taking all trash with them, and most of all, they are pleasant people.). Thanks Akian Plumbing.

High-Amperage Electrical Panel Upgrades

Your main distribution board is the heart of your home’s electrical grid. If your property is still running on a legacy 100-amp service panel, you are likely experiencing flickering lights, blown fuses, or frequently tripping circuit breakers when running multiple appliances. We upgrade maxed-out systems to modern 200-amp or 400-amp electrical panels. Every upgrade we perform integrates advanced whole-house surge protective devices (SPDs) to shield your sensitive electronics, smart appliances, and mechanical systems from sudden utility voltage spikes.

When your main distribution board runs entirely out of physical breaker spaces but still possesses adequate overall electrical capacity, you do not necessarily need an immediate utility overhaul. Our team can integrate a secondary structural subpanel, which clears up terminal room and neatly isolates heavy appliance currents. This practical intervention maximizes your existing system layout while preventing localized circuit overloads.

Plugging a high-demand vehicle into a standard household outlet can severely strain older residential wiring grids. We install advanced Level 2 charging docks that utilize a dedicated 240-volt circuit line, ensuring safe and optimized power delivery without flickering your lights. Every installation is meticulously calibrated to match your home’s exact peak load requirements.

A sudden grid failure can instantly cut off your home’s heating, refrigeration, and critical medical devices. Our standby emergency power systems actively monitor utility lines and engage within seconds of an outage, keeping your essential infrastructure operational. We handle everything from fuel line integration to final municipal safety inspections.

Secondary Structural Subpanel Installation

When your primary distribution panel runs completely out of physical breaker spaces but still has remaining overall electrical capacity, a secondary structural subpanel is a highly efficient solution. Rather than investing in an immediate, full-scale main utility service overhaul, our team can engineer and install a localized subpanel. This intervention clears up crucial terminal room on your main board, allows for clean circuit organization, and isolates heavy power draws like electric vehicle docks, climate systems, or workshop machinery to maintain perfect balance across your branch circuits.

Standby Generator Installation and Transfer Switches

Severe New England weather can disrupt municipal power grids without warning, knocking out heating systems, refrigeration, and medical equipment. Our emergency power solutions include sizing and installing reliable whole-home standby generator units. We cleanly integrate these systems with code-approved automatic or manual transfer switches, ensuring your backup power source engages safely within seconds of a utility blackout. This setup keeps your essential household systems running smoothly while actively preventing dangerous electrical backfeeding into the neighborhood grid.

Rapid-Fueling Home EV Charger Setups

As sustainable transportation grows across Middlesex County and Suffolk County, having a dedicated charging station at home is a major convenience. Plugging an electric car into a standard 120-volt wall outlet provides agonizingly slow charging speeds and can strain older residential wiring circuits. We install advanced Level 2 smart vehicle charging docks powered by dedicated 240-volt circuits. Our master electricians carefully assess your panel’s peak load availability, run heavy-duty conductors, and install perfectly regulated breakers to deliver fast, safe, and efficient fueling right in your private garage.

Dedicated Circuitry for Heavy Mechanical Loads

High-demand appliances require isolated power pathways to operate safely and efficiently. Modern plumbing and heating equipment, such as high-recovery electric water heaters, hybrid heat pumps, and tankless systems, draw massive, continuous currents during operation. Sharing a circuit line with standard household outlets violates the National Electrical Code (NEC). We route dedicated heavy-gauge non-metallic sheathed cables and install specialized dual-pole or multi-pole circuit breakers directly from your distribution board to your heavy machinery, preventing localized overloads and keeping your appliances running at peak thermal capacity.

Rigid Conduit Pathways and Weatherproof Disconnect Enclosures

Electrical safety near water lines and outdoor spaces requires absolute professional adherence to Massachusetts building regulations. Local codes dictate that a dedicated external, weatherproof electrical disconnect box must be mounted within direct sight of heavy mechanical appliances like heat pumps and water heaters. This allows technicians to manually isolate high-voltage power lines before performing repairs. Our field teams run premium metal or PVC rigid conduit channels to shield vulnerable feeding wires from physical impacts, environmental moisture, and corrosive degradation over time.

Ensuring Safe High-Amp Mechanical Upgrades in Legacy Jamaica Plain Homes

Legacy homes in Jamaica Plain possess unique architectural characteristics that can be optimized for high-amp mechanical upgrades without compromising safety or historical integrity. Our extensive experience in electrical engineering and compliance with local building codes ensures that each upgrade is executed with precision and reliability. By leveraging advanced techniques and a thorough understanding of older home systems, we provide homeowners with peace of mind, knowing their investments are protected and enhancements are made in alignment with industry standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my home need a dedicated circuit for a new electric water heater?

High-demand appliances like electric water heaters draw a massive, continuous current to maintain stable thermal recovery. Forcing these mechanical loads to share an electrical line with standard household outlets or lighting systems violates the National Electrical Code (NEC), resulting in frequent circuit breaker trips and serious fire hazards.

How do I know if my service panel needs an upgrade for an EV charger or tankless system?

If your Jamaica Plain home runs on a legacy 100-amp panel, installing heavy equipment like a Level 2 EV charging dock or an instantaneous tankless water heater will likely max out its overall electrical capacity. Common indicators that you need a high-amperage 200-amp or 400-amp upgrade include flickering lights, buzzing sounds from your distribution board, or blown fuses.

What is a secondary subpanel, and when is it a better choice than a full panel upgrade?

A secondary structural subpanel is ideal when your main panel has remaining power capacity but is completely out of physical space to add new breakers. Instead of investing in a full utility service overhaul, our team installs a subpanel to clear up terminal room, organize branch circuits, and safely isolate localized electrical draws like heavy workshop tools or climate systems.

Why is an external weatherproof disconnect box required near my heating and water systems?

Massachusetts building and electrical safety codes mandate that a dedicated, weatherproof electrical disconnect box must be mounted within direct sight of heavy mechanical units. This allows our technicians or emergency responders to safely isolate high-voltage power lines locally before beginning any thermal element restorations, multimeter circuit diagnostics, or plumbing maintenance.

Can Akian handle both the plumbing and electrical work for a hybrid heat pump upgrade?

Yes. Because hybrid heat pump units require a complex mix of professional plumbing lines and a dedicated 240-volt multi-pole breaker supply, Akian handles the entire installation process in-house. Our combined plumbing and electrical expertise across Suffolk County ensures that your energy-efficient upgrade is completed safely, perfectly permitted, and fully up to local code codes without hiring multiple separate contractors.
